FAQ

Every Italy Pass rule, answered

The questions we are actually asked, grouped by the four things that decide whether a pass works for you: how long it lasts, what it covers, who may use it, and what happens if plans change. Passes start at $197.

Validity

Validity and travel days

The Italy Pass gives you a set number of travel days to use freely inside a one-month window. Almost every question we get is about how those days are counted.

When does the pass become valid?

Validity starts on the first day you activate it in the Rail Planner app, not on the day you buy it. You choose the activation date when you set the pass up, and you can move it before the first journey is added.

How long is the validity window?

One month from the activation date. A 3, 4, 5, 6 or 8-day pass spreads those travel days across those 31 days however you like — consecutive days, weekends only, or one day a week.

What counts as one travel day?

A calendar day from 00:00 to 23:59. Within that day you can take as many trains as you want: Rome to Florence in the morning, Florence to Siena in the afternoon and back at night is still one travel day.

How does the overnight rule work?

A direct train that leaves after 19:00 and arrives the next day after 04:00 uses only the departure day. If you change trains after midnight, the second day is used as well.

How long do I have to use the pass after buying it?

The pass must be activated before first use and within 11 months of the issue date. Buy early to lock in today's fare, then decide your dates later.

Do I have to keep the pass online?

Yes. Pass holders must bring the pass online at least once every 24 hours — the issuer tightened this from 72 hours as a fraud-prevention measure. Hotel or station wi-fi is enough; you do not need data on the train itself.

How quickly is the pass issued after I order?

Pass fulfilment is processed within 1–2 business days of payment. Order at least a week before you fly if your first travel day is fixed.

Can I change the activation date after I have set it?

Yes, as long as the pass is unused. Once the first journey is added to the pass in the app, the activation date is fixed.

Do I have to add every journey to the app?

Yes. Each journey goes on the pass before you board, and the conductor scans the QR code on your phone. An unlisted journey is treated as travelling without a ticket, and the fine is charged on the spot.

Coverage

Zones, coverage and operators

The Italy Pass has no zones — that is a Swiss and German idea. It is a single-country pass covering the whole Trenitalia network, with a handful of exceptions that catch people out.

Are there zones on the Italy Pass?

No. Unlike some regional European products, the Italy Pass is not split into zones or regions. One pass covers the entire national Trenitalia network from Bolzano to Sicily, including the train ferry across the Strait of Messina.

Which trains are included?

Frecciarossa, Frecciargento, Frecciabianca, Intercity, Intercity Notte, Regionale and Regionale Veloce are all covered by the pass itself. On the fast and Intercity trains you still buy a seat reservation.

Is Italo included?

No. Italo is a private high-speed operator and accepts no rail pass of any kind. If your plan runs on Italo, you buy a normal Italo ticket.

What about private and regional operators?

Trenord, FSE, Ferrovie del Sud Est, Circumvesuviana and the Sardinian narrow-gauge lines are outside the pass or only partly covered. Buy those tickets locally; they are cheap.

Does the pass work for international trains?

Yes, for the Italian portion and beyond if your pass covers the other country. EuroCity services to Switzerland, Austria and Germany need a compulsory reservation, and the Milan–Paris and Milan–Zurich runs sell a small pass quota.

Does it cover airport trains and city transport?

The Leonardo Express to Rome Fiumicino and the Malpensa Express are not covered by the pass. Metro, tram and bus travel is never included in any rail pass.

Restrictions

Restrictions and eligibility

Most refused passes come down to two things: the wrong product for your residency, or a reservation that was never bought.

Eurail or Interrail — which am I allowed to buy?

Interrail is for residents of Europe, the UK, Switzerland, Norway and Turkey. Eurail is for everyone else, and a Eurail pass is not valid for a European resident. Bring the passport or ID that matches the pass you hold, because it is checked with the pass.

Can I travel in my home country on the pass?

Interrail passes allow only a limited number of travel days in your country of residence. For an Italy Pass held by an Italian resident this matters; for everyone else it does not apply.

Do I still need a reservation with a pass?

On every Frecciarossa, Frecciargento, Frecciabianca, Intercity, Intercity Notte and EuroCity, yes. Regionale and Regionale Veloce trains need nothing — turn up and board.

Are reservations limited for pass holders?

Yes, and this is the real restriction. Each high-speed train releases a small quota of pass-holder seats. The train can be half-empty and the pass quota still sold out, in which case you take a later train or buy a full ticket.

What are the age rules?

Youth fares apply from 12 to 27 inclusive, senior fares from 60, adult fares in between. Children 0–11 travel free on a child pass with an adult pass holder — two children per adult — but they still need paid reservations on the fast trains.

Can the pass be transferred to someone else?

No. A pass is printed and issued with the traveller's name and passport or ID number, and only that person may use it.

What happens if my details are wrong?

Tell us before the pass is issued and we correct it for free. After issue a name change means a refund request and a new pass, subject to the refund rules below.

Refunds

Refunds, changes and lost passes

Refund terms are set by the pass issuer, not by us. They are generous while the pass is unused and effectively nil once it has been activated.

Can I get a refund on an unused pass?

Yes. Standard Eurail passes are refundable while unused and unactivated, less a 10% cancellation fee, and the refund goes back to the original payment method.

Can I refund an activated pass?

No. Once the pass is activated or a first journey is added in the app, it has no refund value, even if you use none of the remaining travel days.

What if my train is cancelled or badly delayed?

The pass itself is not refunded, but a reservation on a cancelled train is. Delay compensation on a pass journey follows Trenitalia's own rules and is claimed from Trenitalia, not from the pass issuer.

Are seat reservations refundable?

Reservations are generally non-refundable and non-changeable once issued, except when the operator cancels the train. Book them only when your dates are firm.

What if I lose my phone?

A mobile pass is tied to one device, but it can be moved. Contact the issuer with your pass number and they transfer it to a new device — keep the pass number somewhere other than the phone.

How do I start a refund with you?

Send us your order reference and the email you used to order and we will open the refund with the issuer on your behalf. We charge nothing for doing that; only the issuer's handling fee applies.

If your question is about a specific route, date or group, it is faster to ask. We answer with the actual timetable and reservation quota rather than a general rule.
