The pass

What the Italy Pass actually is

One pass, a set number of travel days, spread across one month. It covers the whole Trenitalia network — high-speed, Intercity and regional — but on the fast trains you still pay for a seat.

Travel days

3, 4, 5, 6 or 8 days of unlimited travel, used on dates you choose within one month of first activation.

Format

A mobile pass in the Rail Planner app. You add each journey to the pass before boarding; the conductor scans your phone.

These are the published fares, not estimates. Child passes are free with an accompanying adult, but reservations for children are charged in full.

The terms

Validity, activation and refunds, as sold

These are the issuer's own conditions for the Eurail Italy Pass — the ones that decide whether your dates work and what happens if they change.

Validity window

3, 4, 5, 6 or 8 travel days used inside one month. The month runs from the date you start the pass; unused days expire with it.

Activation deadline

The pass must be activated before first use and within 11 months of the issue date, so you can buy at today's fare and fix your dates later.

Children

Up to two children aged 0–11 travel free with each adult pass holder on a free child pass. Their seat reservations are still charged in full.

Residency

Eurail passes are not valid for European residents; Europeans buy the identical Interrail Italy Pass instead.

Reservations

Most high-speed and night trains require a paid seat reservation on top of the pass. Regional trains never do.

Refunds

Standard Eurail passes are refundable while unused, minus a 10% cancellation fee. Once activated the pass has no refund value.

Staying online

Pass holders must bring the pass online at least every 24 hours (previously 72) to keep it active — a fraud-prevention rule, not a data connection requirement while travelling.

Fulfilment

Passes are processed and issued within 1–2 business days of your order being paid.

The catch

A pass is not a ticket

On Italian high-speed trains a pass entitles you to travel but not to a seat. Every Frecciarossa, Frecciargento and Intercity needs a reservation bought separately, and the quota of pass-holder seats per train is small.

Where the pass shines

  • · Regional trains — no reservation, no fee, turn up and go.
  • · Long Intercity runs south, where a reservation is only €3.
  • · Trips where dates might move, since you're not locked to a train.
  • · Days with two or three journeys on one date.

Where it doesn't

  • · Three fixed high-speed hops booked months ahead — advance fares beat it.
  • · Trips built around Italo, which accepts no pass at all.
  • · Short trips with one long journey and a lot of walking.

Questions

The rules people get wrong

The short version is below. Validity windows, coverage, restrictions and refund terms are covered in full on the Italy Pass FAQ.

What counts as a travel day?

One calendar day, from midnight to midnight, during which you can take as many trains as you like. A day trip out and back uses one travel day, not two.

What is the validity window?

Your travel days are spread across one month from first use. A 5-day pass gives you five travelling days chosen freely within those 31 days.

Is the night train rule different?

Yes. A train departing after 19:00 that arrives the next morning uses only the first day, provided it is a direct service.

Eurail or Interrail?

Same product, different name. Interrail is for residents of Europe, the UK, Switzerland, Norway and Turkey; Eurail is for everyone else — Eurail passes are not valid for European residents. The fares on this site are the Eurail Italy Pass prices in US dollars.

Do children need a pass?

Children aged 0 to 11 travel free on a child pass when accompanied by an adult pass holder — up to two children per adult. They still need their own reservation, and that still costs money.

Is first class worth it?

On a Frecciarossa first class means a wider seat and a snack. It adds roughly 30% to the pass price. On a busy summer route it buys you calm; the rest of the time second class is fine.
