The finest coastal railway in Italy: the line runs on the shoreline for well over a hundred kilometres, with Stromboli visible offshore near Praia.
Advice
Before you book
Take the Intercity rather than the Freccia: €3 instead of €13, and the slower schedule hugs the coast for longer.
Sit on the right-hand side going south for the sea.
From Villa San Giovanni the Intercity carriages are shunted onto the Messina ferry — stay on board or go up to the deck.
